Objectives and content

This course teaches participants to read, independently process and write English texts in a broad legal context. On the one hand, your reading skills will be further developed by making use of authentic texts (e.g. decrees, contracts, etc.). On the other hand, your writing skills will also be enhanced. You will learn how to write correct English texts paying attention to style, register, coherence, and grammatical correctness. Moreover, your formal and legal English vocabulary will be practised and further extended. Finally, this course will also allow you to enhance your speaking and listening skills through group work, debates and pair work.

Legal topics that will be dealt with include:

Criminal Law
The Legal Profession
Contract Law
Family Law
Employment Law
European Law

Specific grammatical items include:

Relative clauses
The tenses (esp. Present Perfect vs Simple Past)
Linking words
The passive voice

Required prior knowledge

Fluent command of English, in line with secondary school level of English.
