Content:
After a general introduction on academic style and vocabulary, this course focuses on the different sections in research papers (Abstracts, Literature Reviews, Introductions, Methods, Results, Discussions). We will examine authentic examples from the participants’ disciplines, which serves as a basis to introduce different writing techniques and to give tips to avoid frequently made mistakes.
In addition, the participants’ own research papers are thoroughly studied and evaluated and corrected in class, both by the teacher and by the peers. Due to lively interaction, a discussion forum is built that does not strive for rigid rules and instructions, but trains linguistic confidence in academic writing.
There are five options in different disciplines:
- Academic English – Natural Sciences (Faculty of Sciences)
- Academic English – Life Sciences and Medicine (Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences)
- Academic English – Arts, Humanities and Law (Faculty of Arts and Philosophy and Faculty of Law)
- Academic English – (Bioscience) Engineering (Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Bioscience Engineering)
- Academic English – Social and Behavioural Sciences (Faculty of Economics and Business Administration, Faculty of Political and Social Sciences and Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences)

This course is situated within the framework of continuous training. After completion of the entire cycle and a final evaluation on the basis of a research paper, participants receive the continuous training certificate ”Advanced Academic English: Writing Skills”. The course may count toward doctoral schooling (3 credits).
