Objectives and content

If you are looking for interactive classes to acquire a basic knowledge of spoken Arabic as soon as possible, you came to the right place!

You will acquire practical survival communication skills for beginners. Therefore, the course opts for simplified standard Arabic, which is compatible with spoken relay languages, especially from the Levant. Grammar is taught in function of the communicative goals, of which there are three in this module:

  • preparing a student for an intake conversation for a summer course of Arabic in the Arab world
  • acquiring a broad vocabulary related to Arab food and drinks
  • being able to hold a conversation during a visit to the doctor

The starting point is always a communicative action such as getting to know someone in an informal context, surviving a culture shock, learning a language, going out, undergoing an ID-check, inviting someone, expressing feelings, confirming and cancelling, using public transport, eating and drinking in the Arab world, expressing a preference, voicing a complaint, telling time, discussing your schedule and finding and visiting a doctor.

After these modules, you will be familiar with the singular and plural forms of the present tense, you will be able to recognize the second and fifth form of the derived verbs and be able to use a range of frequently used regular verbs in the present tense. You will also learn the internal and external plural forms of the discussed nouns, a range of frequently used adjectives and the nisba, the plural form of the personal pronouns, frequently used linking words, subject/verb-congruence, the present participle and the imperative.

Both your oral and written production skills will be evaluated by means of an integrated task and a portfolio.

Extra exercises will also be made available.
